James Fields drives a car into a group of counter-protesters in Charlottesville, VA, killing Heather Heyer, and injuring 19 others. Prior to the incident, Fields was pictured wearing symbols and the uniform associated with Vanguard America. The organization has since denied any ties to Fields.

Political Protest

Two police officers are injured during a political protest in Oakland, California. Protesters also broke windows and started small fires in the downtown area. In Los Angles, California, protesters spray paint profanity on the Los Angles Times building and vehicles used by the news outlet. At least 29 people are arrested after a peaceful protest turned into a riot, resulting in property damage, vandalism and attacks on bystanders.

Micah Johnson Shootings

Micah Johnson opens fire on a peaceful protest against police shootings of African-American men in Minnesota and Louisiana. Johnson shot and killed five law enforcement officials before being shot and killed in a stand-off with police. Johnson stated his goal was to kill as many white police officers as possible.
