Responding to the bombing of the Republican Party’s offices in Hillsborough, North Carolina, Donald Trump, with what is becoming all-too-familiar intemperateness, chose to use the incident to tie the attack to Hillary Clinton while claiming it was triggered by Trump leading in the polls of the state.
A couple of key points here:
- Authorities have not given any indication Clinton or North Carolina Democrats were involved in the attack.
- Trump is behind in every poll taken in North Carolina since the end of September.
No matter; Trump is resorting to fanning the flames of violence by consistently claiming that the media, and possibly the election is rigged against him, just as he did when Ted Cruz whipped him brutally in Colorado. On Saturday, Trump fulminated at a rally in New Hampshire, “Remember this, it’s a rigged election because you have phony people coming up with phony allegations with no witnesses whatsoever. The election is being rigged by corrupt media pushing completely false allegations and outright lies in an effort to elect her (Clinton) president.” Prior to Trump speaking, Sen. Jeff Sessions asserted, “They are attempting to rig this election.”
On Sunday Trump tweeted, “The election is absolutely being rigged by the dishonest and distorted media pushing Crooked Hillary – but also at many polling places – SAD.” Trump was echoed by his surrogates, including Rudy Giuliani, who told CNN’s Jake Tapper onState of the Union: “I’m sorry, dead people generally vote for Democrats rather than Republican. You want me to (say) that I think the election in Philadelphia and Chicago is going to be fair? I would have to be a moron to say that.” Newt Gingrich also got the memo, telling ABC’s This Week: “I remember when Richard Nixon had the election stolen in 1960, and no serious historian doubts that Illinois and Texas were stolen. So to suggest that, we have, you don’t have theft in Philadelphia is to deny reality.”
The frightening reality is that otherwise sane people seem to have bought into Trump’s manipulation; Milwaukee sheriff David Clarke tweeted this on Saturday: “It’s incredible that our institutions of gov, WH, Congress, DOJ, and big media are corrupt & all we do is bitch. Pitchforks and torches time”
The left has used the threats of violence for some time to try to bully the rest of the country and wreck the foundations of our democratic republic. Wasn’t our side supposed to be better than that?
